AUB-RAI Online Course on Gender Equality and Women Empowerment commenced with a session on international regulatory framework
Advocates for gender parity in professional spaces are building the capacity of journalists and other media practitioners on gender equality and women empowerment.
It is an online course organized by the Italian Radio and Television, RAI and the African Union of Broadcasting, AUB.
The course commenced with a session on international regulatory framework and African and European initiatives on gender equality.
Facilitators shared experiences on progress made in the European community, especially in the media sector to give women equal opportunity to work, grow and lead like their male counterparts with legal instruments acting as safeguards for them.
The training delved deep into national experiences in Italy, Georgia, Cameroon, DRCongo, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Niger highlighting the steps taken so far in providing safe work environment for women and giving them points of reference to address gender-based issues like sexual harassments.
The session addressed equal pay for women, maternity safeguard plans at the workplace, positive portrayal of women in the media, stereotypes and encouraged women to take bold steps by getting into professions and practices that seem like exclusive reserve for men.

Karina Laterza graduated in Political Economy from Bocconi University Karina is a professional journalist since 1990. In 1991 she began collaborating with Rai, in Tg1, the news of the first channel. In Radio 3 she conducted a program for children, and at Tg2 – on “Society”. In 1999 she won the “Saint Vincent” award. In January 2014 at RaiNews24 she became editor-in-chief of the Society editorial team. From 2017 to 2020 Karina was General Secretary of the “Prix Italia”, the international competition organized by Rai, aimed at rewarding innovation and excellence in TV, radio and multimedia. Subsequently she became deputy director of the Rai documentaries direction and from 2023 she is Head of Quality of News Structure in the Editorial Direction for the Information Offer. Karina is also President of the Rai Equal Opportunities Commission and of Copeam Diversity and Equal Opportunity Commission.
Berthe Mbala holds a master's degree in Public Law and a higher diploma in Information and Communication Sciences and Techniques from ESSTIC. Born on May 20, 1971 in Ebolowa in the south of Cameroon, Berthe Mbala is a journalist with a passion for the media. Her name became known on the Douala square with the Radio and TV coverage of economic news. She was also co-producer of the monthly economic magazine ECOMAG. As a manager, she was Editor in chief of CRTV radio station Littoral and chief of CRTV radio station Sud and currently, Director of Programs at the General Directorate of Cameroon Radio Television, public service media.
Tinatin Berdzenishvili – Ph.D. in Mass Communication, Director General of The Georgian Public Broadcaster – has been working in the field of media and marketing communication for more than 25 years. She has extensive experience in media management, strategic planning, digital media, and the introduction of new technologies. She also has experience in effective communication with international organizations and the business sector, both in Georgia and in various European countries.
As Senior Project Manager for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Anne Richardson coordinates EBU members’ strategies and fosters the exchange of best practices. As a journalist with nearly 20 years of experience in broadcast news, she works as an Acting News Editor on the Eurovision News Exchange, where she also is in charge of the Kids News programmes.
