2024 China - Africa Summit to shape relations for the future
The 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, set to take place in Beijing from September 4 to 6, promises to be a landmark event in the annals of China-Africa relations.
Under the theme "Joining Hands to Advance Modernization and Build a High-Level China-Africa Community with a Shared Future," leaders from across Africa and China will convene to reaffirm their enduring friendship and chart a new course for mutually beneficial cooperation.
This marks a significant reunion of the China-Africa family, following the successful summits held in Beijing in 2006 and 2018, and Johannesburg in 2015.
The 2024 Summit is poised to be the largest diplomatic event China has hosted in recent years, with an unprecedented number of foreign leaders in attendance.
Delegations from numerous African countries, led by their respective heads of state, will participate in the Summit. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission will also be present, symbolizing the continental unity and shared aspirations. The United Nations Secretary-General will attend as a special guest, while relevant international and regional organizations will observe the proceedings.
In a recent briefing, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Chen Xiaodong outlined the key activities planned for the Summit. These include a welcoming banquet, an opening ceremony, four high-level meetings focused on state governance, industrialization and agricultural modernization, peace and security, and high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. Additionally, the eighth Conference of Chinese and African Entrepreneurs will provide a platform for business leaders to explore new opportunities.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to deliver a pivotal keynote speech, outlining China's vision for a high-level China-Africa community with a shared future. He will also announce concrete actions and measures to advance practical cooperation between the two sides.
Beyond the multilateral events, President Xi Jinping will engage in bilateral meetings with foreign leaders attending the Summit. The culmination of the Summit will be the adoption of two outcome documents: a Declaration and an Action Plan. These documents will solidify the consensus reached between China and Africa, and provide a roadmap for high-quality cooperation in the coming years.
The 2024 FOCAC Summit presents a unique opportunity for China and Africa to strengthen their partnership and address the pressing challenges of our time.
