DR Congo hosted the very- first Biennale of Peace and Security in Central Africa
The event held on October 14, 2022 at the headquarters of the College of Advanced Studies in Strategy and Defense (CHESD) in Kinshasa, in the presence of the President of the ECCAS Commission and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for the sub-region.
“To examine the impact and contribution of the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) in Central Africa over the years”. This is one of the objectives of the 1st edition of the Central African Biennale for a culture of peace. The event opened on October 14 at the College of Advanced Studies in Strategy and Defense (CHESD) in Kinshasa, thus making the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, but also CHESD, a high place of reflection on issues relating to defense and security issues on the continent. A choice which was delighted by the President of the ECCAS Commission present at the opening of the event. CHESD is indeed “a center of excellence of the Economic Community of Central African States. It is therefore a prestigious institution whose vocation is to increase added value to the training of officers called upon to assume high responsibilities and to perpetuate the long tradition and commitment of the Member States in favor of peace, security and stability in Africa in general and in our sub-region in particular", Gilberto Da Piedade Verissimo said.
The community leader was alongside several other personalities, among which Abdou Abarry. He is the head of the United Nations Regional Office for the sub-region (Brenuac/Unoca) and as such, he is the special representative of the United Nations Secretary General in Central Africa. Their presence and their contributions made it possible to address several other issues like:
- Raising awareness on the importance of peace for individual and collective well-being;
- Examining the place of culture in the peace and security architecture of the region; and
- Proposing the constituent pillars of an ECCAS multisectoral roadmap to silence guns in the region”.
